Pupil tags for safer school trips

Pupils on trips are to wear tags displaying a school ID and phone number through which their teachers can be identified and contacted automatically.

Anyone who finds a lost pupil or sees one misbehaving can phone the number and input the school's ID on the tag.

This automatically calls the mobiles of all teachers on the trip or, if there is no answer, a 24-hour call centre.

The service launches after a growing number of negligence claims have made teachers less keen to organise trips.

It also provides a voicemail account on which teachers can leave messages for the parents of the children in their care.

Supported by the National Association of Head Teachers and the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations, the service, School Trips Plus, is being offered to all pre-school settings, primary and secondary schools in the UK.

It is free of charge for the first year, thanks to a sponsorship deal.

The organisers said they had yet to decide on pricing after that, but describe the set-up and first-year fee as being "worth over £250".

The service's website gives the educational programmes, contact details, health and safety policies, potential hazards and emergency procedures of more than 7,000 UK attractions.

Paul Kent, managing director of Community Alerts, which developed the service, said: "We hope to provide teachers with the confidence and reassurance they have the tools to make school trips safer."
